Abstract

Current methods for voice modulation training, and intonation in particular, which is the last stage of speech therapy, require the child to visit the doctor for sessions regularly. While it is required that the doctor be present in the early stages of therapy, the later stages all include exercises that need to be practiced regularly. The doctor is present only to provide appropriate feedback. Spending more than 30 minutes everyday with a doctor for repetitive exercises is cumbersome and makes the child dependent on the doctor. Another reason the child has to visit the doctor is because the instruments used by the doctors are expensive and complicated for the average user to afford or use, let alone a child. For example, Dr. Speech, an American proprietary instrument, can cost upwards of INR 3 lakhs [5].
The aim of this project is to design a suitable solution that lets the child develop her intonation patterns without having to rely on another person. For this to function, the solution needs to be able to provide the same kind of feedback that a doctor would.
