Dynamic Arm Brace for Paralysis
Product Design
Abstract
Today nearly 1 out of 50 people are living with paralysis with the major cause being strokes or injury to the head or spine. These people who have lost their control over limbs find it difficult to meet their daily needs. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in low-income and middle-income countries like India. Most of the rehabilitation treatments and bionic orthotics are very expensive and not readily available in the Indian market. The majority of stroke survivors continue to live with disabilities, and the costs of on-going rehabilitation and long-term-care are largely undertaken by family members, which impoverish their families. There are not enough low cost readily available options there is a necessity to do more research and development for such a target audience. Hence the aim is to design a low-cost orthotic to help people with paralyzed arms lead a self-dependent life.
