Design is everywhere. For me, designing is knowing which things to keep. My designs aim to not just look aesthetically pleasing, but make the user more valuable. I enjoy learning and challenging myself constantly; it's just more fun that way. If I had to tell you about one of my superpowers, it would be that I can bring back machines to life.

AUX: Controller for a person with a disability

Product Design

Abstract

Technological products are often designed by considering the needs of a person
whose senses are working, and that excludes a person with disabilities. It is very difficult for a person with upper limb disability to interact with devices like computer and mobile using a controller. The objective of this thesis project is to make a controller that allows user to interact with computers and mobiles for tasks like playing games, typing, media control and interact with the latest technology like virtual reality.

The secondary research was conducted in the areas such as types of controllers, their specifications, different types of disabilities and the types of sensors used in controllers. Matrix was made of different types of controllers versus different types of disabilities, and from that basic requirement for the controller were derived. Users were interviewed, and the critical issues they faced while interacting with devices were observed. Expert interviews were conducted in order to understand the problems in detail and feedbacks were taken on initial concepts. Technology exploration was done parallelly with research to check the feasibility of concepts.
Concepts were designed considering disability types and ways of interaction. After mapping with concepts and user requirements, chair-based controller design direction was finalized. After that, the three working wireless controller prototype was made. Software and hardware flexibilities were given to the user in order to meet most of the user’s requirements. After user testing, and getting feedback, the final improved, refined and detailed cad model is designed for simpler use.
