Pragati Saraf

Hello, I am Pragati. I am an engineer turned designer. Design education has opened up another world to me where every problem has a possible solution. Learning something new wasn’t as fulfilling as ever before and I am deeply grateful to the Department of Design for giving me an opportunity to learn things all over again. With an inclination towards interaction design, I like exploring new dimensions of art and technology. Affective design, Re-imagining education and Design for accessibility and inclusion are a few topics which keep me glued.

Low Cost Refreshable Braille

Product Design

Abstract

About one fourth of the world’s blind population lives in India. Children with visual impairment need special resources such as braille book and assistive technologies to have the same opportunities in education as their sighted counterparts. Lack of resources creates a barrier in learning how to read and write for students with visual impairment and increases the no. of drop outs from schools. This gap of unavailability of resources needs to be worked upon. Vision Empower (Not-for Profit enterprise) has initiated this project to redesign and develop a low-cost Refreshable braille display which can help the students with visual impairment in reading a variety of books as well as making it affordable for the students. Currently, the device has been technically developed to perform basic tasks. The navigation and layout of the device is poor in terms of usability and demands a redesign with proper testing and evaluation. The objective of this project is to make the device useful and usable for students with visual impairment. We have conducted user studies to identify the problems which students face while using the device. Insights of the study helped in generating solutions which make the device usable and increase its learnability.
