Voice Pal: A speech therapy tool for differently-abled children

Product Design

Abstract

About 35.29% of the children suffering from congenital diseases
have access to school. Around 71% of the affected children – 23.05 lakh children – are in rural areas. In rural areas there are usually just one general doctor present, there is a lack of doctors specialized in congenital diseases. In a lot of cases there is not even a pediatrician present. Without the special care needed to help the children overcome their impediments, the children are completely reliant on their parents and or caretakers. These children are unable to take care of themselves or even learn how to do so. They become completely reliant on their caretakers. Without the help of these caretakers they cannot even survive on their own. Due to the lack of communication skills they are often shunned from society and are often mistreated. When these children are provided with speech therapy they begin to understand the concepts behind communication and even learn to speak as they grow older. However this is not always the case. For a lot of the children due to physical or mental reasons they are unable to communicate via
Speech.

For children with proper motor skills and normal mental growth unaided AAC such as sign languages can be used to communicate. However since a lot of congenital diseases also affect the body this is not possible for all cases. In these cases an Alternative communication method is needed. While a lot of low tech AAC such as word books and Picture Exchange Communication etc are available these are very limiting and do not let the child express themselves enough to go through their daily activities in a smooth and efficient manner.

Almost all of the AAC devices used in India are imported from foreign countries such as the USA. These devices can cost upward of 1000-2000 dollars. Due to socioeconomic reasons these devices are not affordable for a large majority of people. Because of this most people are restricted to low tech devices. In some cases when speech therapy fails to show improvement. The parents tend to give up or try alternative treatment methods.
