Abhishek Kunjappan

Hi there,
I am currently working as a UX designer at CISCO Systems, Bangalore. I hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering. My design experience ranges from User Research, Product Design, Product Aesthetics, and Graphics Design.
I believe to become a conceptual thinker who can start with a big idea, identify product and design opportunities. Design school has taught me to build a systematic approach to design problems. The best thing I like about design is how it becomes invisible when it is still making its most profound impact on our everyday life. I believe my diverse background and skills gives me a unique edge in shaping meaningful human experiences. Out of work, I love unleashing my thoughts through playing guitar. I am an ardent learner and a big-time food lover.

Skull Cutting Device

Product Design

Abstract

In this thesis project, the critical issues present in the conventional electrical oscillating Stryker saw was studied. The challenges like controlling the inhalation of infectious airborne particles during an autopsy, smooth cutting of the skull without damaging the brain, and the need for a lightweight, handy device were the key focus of the project. A literature study was done to understand the various cutting devices available in the different fields of carpentry, medical saws, mining, Culinary, Gardening, and excavation tools. Field research was conducted to study the current practices for autopsy in the India government hospitals. Different mechanical concepts were generated considering the challenges. The final design selected was then prototyped and was tested. After testing the prototype, the embodiment design and assembly design was undertaken, where all the various components were identified as per the different features that make up the intentional functionality of the product. Various form exploration was done considering the ergonomic factors needed for gripping the device along the direction of the force. The project's outcome is a skull cutting device with effective dust control, lightweight, and depth controlled cutting saw.
