Designing a service based system for Indian Trucking Industry

Automobile & Transportation

Abstract

The Indian logistics industry has been contributing a large percentage of India’s total GDP, with almost 14%, it is not only a big chunk but also tells us that this industry is not small, and has the potential to contribute more to building this nation. Although being this big, a large percentage of this industry is unorganized and fragmented, with single owner truck drivers and fleet operators. In the last few years, Indian has been doing poorly in the logistics performance index because large numbers of truck drivers are leaving this job due to poor wages. From almost 900 drivers per 1000 trucks, the number has been on the decline and in a study that was conducted in 2017, it was found the ratio was 600 per 1000 truck. In this report, I want to consider what Truck drivers mean to this industry, By 2025 India will need around 20 million truck drivers in order to survive as an industry. India needs 1 crore jobs each year and data shows that it is startups and not established enterprises that can cater to such needs. In order to bring this change, we need a large number of startups in the upcoming years. In spite of this big shortage in the industry few new startups having innovative ideas have made some impact in the industry, but it does not cater to the truck’s driver as a whole. This study presents few such cases of Indian truck drivers as well as trucking companies, focusing on understanding their problems, finding gaps, addressing a few of them, as well as how the industry's new startups thrive to bring about a change in truck drivers ' lives. Through this project, I want to discover different approaches in addressing problems and develop a service-based model for the same and implement it as a methodology to develop a framework for such an industry. Hence we are building a sustainable future for our country.
